Please let us know how it turns out, especially the upgrade part. Our NT
Systems group is balking at upgrading to BES 4.0 until after the Exchange
2003 upgrade is complete. Unfortunately, that will not happen until late Q1,
early Q2. Also anxious to know how well the wireless sync of contacts goes.

Thanks,

Just ordered BES 4.0 today. If it delivers on what it says, it will do
everything wirelessly and we won't need cradles any longer. COM/USB
redirection no more. Ahhhh.

We use BES for Exchange as well and it works great for wireless email and
calendar sync, but it does not currently support task and contacts sync
wirelessly, at least not until 4.0 is deployed. Are you using BES 4.0 or do
your users not need to keep contacts in sync with Outlook?

Thanks,

We use Blackberry's Enterprise server for Exchange and thus don't need to do
local syncing with the Blackberries. It works wonderfully for us and well
worth the expense to get rid of having to support USB syncing. We're getting
rid of all the various PDAs and moving everyone to Blackberries.

I tested a blackberry with USB-IT and it worked, however at the time of my
testing USB-IT could only be installed on a Thick Client, or a WinTerm
running XPe. They plan to support WinCE sometime next year. After
installing USB-IT on my test server it became somewhat unstable (the screen
would freeze and then explorer.exe would crash). However, my test box is
quite underpowered so that may have something to do with it.

Low-level port redirection over USB, the kind presumably required by PDAs
for synchronization, is not supported over Citrix MetaFrame according to
Knowledgebase document CTX816193. I was hoping to hear from the field that
one or more have it working and it's great over COM ports, or using USB-IT,
or it's not working very well at all and we should can the plan to deploy
BBs. We are in the early stages of technology recommendation for this group
of users. I don't have a problem recommending BBs if they can function in
the field over our existing infrastructure, but if they do not play well
over what we have in place, I would rather seek a better solution for these
users.

I would think that if your thin clients IOS and version of Citrix support
USB that it should work. The syncing is working on the server end via a db.

Rob Slayden rote:

We are considering the possibility of deploying Blackberry PDAs to some of
our field. These users would need to be able to sync periodically from a
desktop pub app on a Wyse WBT. I realize that USB synchronization is not
supported with the standard product (Citrix), and that COM port sync might
be a viable option. I also took a peek at the EOL USB-IT product and am
waiting on a callback to determine if it is supported on a thin client WBT
or if it requires a fat client. I also realize that the B.E.S 4.0 update
supports wireless sync of all PDA functions and not just Calendar and email.
That being said, I am curious to know if anyone has deployed Blackberry PDAs
successfully and is sync'ing over WBTs and Citrix over COM ports and/or USB
using USB-IT or any other products. There seemed to be some indication in
the archives that some were expe riencing problems with COM port
synchronization. I know that there was a timeout issue with client version
7.1 previously. Also, we may not be able to implement an upgrade to B.E.S
4.0 soon due to the necessity to tread carefully there because we have our
entire executive staff and IT depending upon it.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
