MessageWhat version of RDP are you using?
You would need 5.1 minimal on CE to provide com port redirection.

We can even setup a pc with no client software and no driver whatsoever,
nothing, and connect to the terminal server via rdp, and using port
redirection get the RS232 reader to work attached to the pc that way, but
when we do the same EXACT thing using a thin client, we get nothing. It
just displays an error message saying that the reader could not be detected?
This makes no sense at all...

  Logically makes sense.
Do you get any error messages or no response?
Can you redirect any serial input?

We are looking at a different company's readers to use with our thin
clients. They put out a very nice 500 dpi high end reader. They have
readers available in USB and in RS232. With the RS232 reader on a pc, there
is no driver installation necessary. Using port redirection on 2003 TS, do
you know if it would be possible to get an RS232 reader working on a thin
client? Why or why not? So far we have had no luck.

    Thanks!

For CE based thin clients, the limiting factor is device driver support.
Identix has worked with thin client vendors to develop a CE device
driver for their USB finger reader.

Other biometric solutions would probably work with XPe or Linux based
thin clients, assuming that there is device driver support for the actual
reader.
XPe uses standard XP drivers and Linux based thin clients could be
customized to add Linux drivers.

      Bill,

Do you know if there are any future plans to support any other
Biometrics vendors besides Identix? Why have both WYSE and Neoware chosen
Identix over all others to partner with on this?

      Thanks,

Historically, I would reply off-line to respect the forum users.
However, during the Shula's dinner @ iForum, several members requested
that I post any meaningful information.

Neoware CE based thin clients, as well as others, support biometrics
using the Identix solution;
Which includes Biologon server software on a Terminal Server, the
Identix USB finger reader and local device drivers.
The device drivers are included in the standard build for Neoware CE
based thin clients, providing a plug and play environment.

We also support the Xyloc devices on our XPe thin clients.
You can adjust the range of the Xyloc proximity readers and also
assign "preferred" user(s) to specific devices, so that only specific badges
are identified on a particular thin client.

I am also looking into the Biopassword solution but expect it to only
function on our XPe line, at this time, since there are local win32
components required on the client.

Xyloc is pretty slick, but in a call center, when you have people
using thin clients that sit only 6 or 8 feet away from one another, a radio
device that transmits up to 50 feet is an evil, EVIL thing...

        :(

Ask him what happens if a user breaks a finger or hand or loses
one....how easy is it to retrain. It is pretty cool stuff. I had a demo of
it at iforum and am pretty impressed.
You need to work at them to get the price down though if you have
a lot of users.

I also think that Xloc device is pretty awesome.

Funny you should mention BioPassword.. I stumbled across
them shortly after I made this post, and I have a conference call scheduled
with them for Monday to get a 90-day 10-user eval.. Seems pretty solid.

As for tunneling through ICA, unfortunately, we are only using
2000 TS, not Citrix, so there's no ICA here..

Does anyone here have any experience with BioPassword, good or
bad? I'm going to guinea pig it in a test forest next week, but just wanted
to know if theres anything I should watch out for..

              Jeff,
I think it really depends on what you want it for. For
example if it is for health care to help with hipaa standards you might want
to look at Xyloc..a device that locks your computer as you walk away and
unlocks it as you are near it.

Biopassword was one of the cool new products at iForum. This
product uses the biometrics of "how you type" to encrypt your password.
Pretty cool stuff.

Integrated biometrics was also a new vendor at iForum. They

Hello list.. I was just wondering if anyone out there is
successfully using any type of biometric authentication on their thin
clients for access to terminal services? If so, what are you using (both
hardware (readers and thin clients) and software) to accomplish this? We
have looked at a few vendors, and no one seems to have a solution without
being able to load drivers locally on the machine..

Our thin clients are all WYSE, with a mix between the
3200LE's and an older model (not sure of the P/N but it's a vertical one
with a parallel port on it - LOL)..

                Thanks!!
