[THIN] Re: Anti-Virus software??

Well, I DO need a product that scans more than just traffic in/out.. For
now, we've been doing without (I know, I know), and making it ok with just
scanning the e-mail at the server level, and scanning the file server where
profiles and home directories are stored, and keeping the farm all patched
and to date with hotfixes. However... We are trying to move our PGP
installs off workstations and onto the farm, which presents a problem,
because email virus scanners cannot scan encrypted email. And since it'll
be entering the box on the wire encrypted, then being decrypted by the user
on the server itself and possibly introducing a virus, we need something
that can scan the server, not just the traffic, in order to make certain
that the decrypted emails pose no threat.

It's up to you, we set it up to only really dump infection reports to a
central server, and you won't see it popup notifications to the user or to
the server's console. You can choose to do it as you wish. Trend was
developed from the get-go as a corporate environment AV program, which is
why the implementation will always require a master or server side
installation for things like, deploying the program to remote servers,
administration of infection reports, automatic updating of dats, etc.
As long as you set it up properly to scan only inbound or outbound traffic
(which is all you'll need on a TS) than you won't see your performance dip
on the processors much at all. Also, there will not be more than one
instance of it running per TServer so your last statement you do not have to
worry about. We use it for both Server and Workstation AV and it is
awesome. The one small drawback that we had at one time, just for the
workstations, was that we couldn't install it on a workstation not on our
network because we couldn't change it per install to update the dats over
the internet instead of via the central server, but we figured out how to do
that as well, so we literally have no complaints about the product at all...

Does this product pop up infection notices to the user, or only to the
console? What is the processor overhead? I know Anti-virus software is
particularly taxing on systems, and I don't want to have 80 instances of a
real-time scanner running clogging up my servers...

We use Trend Micro/Server Protect, works like a charm.

Hello all.. I'm new to this list.

Just wondering what anyone is using for anti-virus software on their
servers?? I am using Windows 2000 Terminal Services, no Citrix... Any
insight would be helpful..

Thanks!!
Jeff
