Are you speaking of CAG standalone or CAG+AAC?
CAG standalone the license file is replicated to the other CAG's when you replicate the settings. CAG+AAC is standard citrix license server so all CAG's talking to AAC are dependent on the AAC being properly licensed.

Thanks…that is also how I understood it, but wanted to be sure, prior to making the license purchase.
And these licenses can be shared across multiple CAG appliances, correct?
Recommendations on failover strategy?

No, as I said and is explained in the documentation, once the CAG is pointed to an AAC server, the licensing function is taken over by the AAC and the normal Citrix license server is used. The CAG stores licenses ONLY if it is standalone (aka without the AAC add-on).

So I have to buy both CAG licenses and AAC licenses?
As I understand it, there are standard CAG licenses, which are stored on the CAG, and Advanced, which enable AAC and are stored on the license server.
With 4.2, advanced options, you set it to use Access Suite Console as the administration, not the local admin, and I assume that is how it knows to use the license server.
Am I correct?

That wouldn't make any sense because how would the CAG know what option you chose? No, you still have to enter the proper name of the CAG when you fulfill hte license but the license is still held on the CAG not a license server.

I think the choice occurs at the time that you allocate and fulfill the license file at Mycitrix.com <http://mycitrix.com/>, that there is an option to specify a license server versus hostname. Sorry if I am confusing this as I switch between versions and sites so often, but I am under the impression that you do have the option to choose server based versed host in the license file fulfillment….

the CAG when coupled with AAC doesn't need any license configuration. It gets the licensing from the AAC servers which point to the license server.
As for the CAG, I"ve worked with 4.2 quite a bit and haven't seen any option or documentation that states it can use the license server. If you come across anything please let me know.

What I am trying to figure out is….
It states you use a base license and an option license…but I only buy one license, the Advanced license for AG, which is AAC license. That points to the license server…and I point the CAG at that…correct? So I switch the CAG from using local admin, to using AAC server, which points the CAG to the license server?

CAG licenses can ONLY be on the CAG.
CAG/AAC licenses can ONLY be in the Access Suite License server.

CAG licenses can either be local or in a Citrix licensing server database. If the case you are describing, I would recommend using the Citirx license server as the licenses are treated as concurrent and can be shared by the two CAG units.
Also, there is a fully supported active/active mode as well which might be of interest to your scenario….

How is licensing handled on this unit.
We intend to buy 2 (redundancy). Our plan is to use one as primary, the other as secondary. IF main fails, it will be set to failover to the secondary. Appears licenses are kept local to the applicance though…can the licenses be shared so they are available no matter which appliance is in use?
