Hi Philip,

Excluding AIE at the moment, you've got 2 different approaches for patching
Office products:

(1) Patch your servers directly. This process can obviously be easily
automated, but it does involve invoking the patching process (slow, i/o
intensive) on each server. This has the advantage of allowing you to reverse
out of a hotfix.

(2) Patch your administrative install point. Test the patched product
thoroughly and then propagate the changes ONLY (files and registry) using
msiexec /i product.msi REINSTALLMODE=om (see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/msi/setup/reinstallmode.asp).
You can still back out of a hotfix, but it involves remving the patch and then
rerunning the REINSTALLMODEprocess.

The advantage of the second approach is that the patch rollout is faster than
the "standard" (1) patching method and it has the further advantage from your
viewpoint that it's fairly easy to update files in an AIE. Worst case is
updating (reinstalling) the AIE with the updated admin install image.

regards,

Rick

Subject: [THIN] AIE

Hello list,

I've recently installed 2 versions of office into my AIE. How do I patch
apps installed into AIE? Not just service packs, but what about regular
patches?

thanks
