Mark, thanks for your response... much appreciated... I will try the download of the appropriate 2003 driver, however I'm surprised that there isn't one on the 2003 server CD!? additional question inline... -----Original Message----- From: Rick Mack [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Rick Mack Sent: 09 November 2004 10:46 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [THIN] 2003 terminal server printing to 2000 server Hi Brian, The UPD is for Citrix Clients, and won't help you're on a 2003 server printing to a network print queue hosted on win2k. To be honest I haven't looked to see if ntprint.inf is still used but I'd be surprised if it didn't. With the exception of the "no kernel mode" printer driver policy and a bunch of new unidrv printer drivers, nothing much has changed from win2k/winXP to 2003. Anyway, back to your problem. You've got a number of options. The first is obvious, disable the policy that denies kernel mode printer drivers. However, if think (like I do) that that sounds like a stupid idea, then the easiest thing to do is to download a "real" winxp/2003 driver for the LaserJet 5Si PCL 5 or equivalent from HP, and modify the name in the printers .inf file to match the NT 4 printer driver name, which is of course 'HP LaserJet 5Si PCL 5e'. Then when you install it on your 2003 system, evrything will work seamlessly. ** Brian : When you say "modify the name in the printers .inf file to match the NT 4 printer driver name", are you referring to ntprint.inf? LPD is driver indpendent, so if you print to an LPD queue hosted on another server (unix, NT 4 or win2K) no checking occurs w.r.t. printer drivers. By using TCP printing support on the target print server you make the printing "chain" driver independent. Except of course it's a good idea if the printer at the other ends bears at least some resemblance to the driver you're using on 2003 ;-). regards, Rick Ulrich Mack Volante Systems _____ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Lilley, Brian Sent: Tue 9/11/2004 8:04 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] 2003 terminal server printing to 2000 server ok, I'm being dumb here I'm sure... I have a 2003 server with the 'install kernel mode drivers' disabled (default). When I try to connect to an 'HP LaserJet 5Si PCL 5e' which is hosted bya Windows 2000 server (using a nt4/win2k kernel mode driver), the 2003 server complains that "The Current print driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 kernel-mode drivers."... which is fair enough, thats exactly what I want it to do, but... Why doesn't 2003 server install an alternative 2003 HP LaserJet 5S1 PCL5e driver?! Ok, well apart from the fact that it doesn't actually have on of that time, I did trie adding all the laserjet 5xxx drivers from the 2003 cd... and I tried to add a mapping with the 2000 driver description 'HP LaserJet 5Si PCL 5e' into the ntprint.inf and WTSprint.inf but to no avail... I vaguely remember reading somewhere that 2003 doesn't even bother reading the wtsprint.inf file but I can remember where I read it, or how one turns it on??! Oh, and whilst I'm ranting, why doesn't the server (which has MPS3) installed not just use the UPDII driver if it won't allow installation of a kernel mode? or is that just for ica auto-created printers? any direction appreciated? ============================================================================== This message is for the sole use of the intended recipient.
