Don’t Look at Their Faces
These times have not yet calmed, especially at the Kotel even though
it has been somewhat opened.
During the Holiday, early in the mornings, crowds of religious men
came to daven *neitz* (pray at sunrise). The Kotel staff was allowing a lot
of us to go inside, and it was so cold most of the visitors wanted to go in
to pray, but there was not enough room inside due to the corona shutdown
requirements that remained.
What was the result? Massive shoving against the guards… pushing… some
yelling…tense frustration… and on and on.
My *minyan* was davening right outside the door to the inside area
where so many of the guests wanted to go. I noticed a few of the regulars
in my minyan watching the crowds.
I told them, “When you look at faces, especially when they are going
through tense times, you may not realize it, but your soul absorbs their
feelings, and you yourself become tense.
One of them answered, “It’s alright because all I am doing is looking
but not seeing, so I don’t feel their tension.”
I explained that we are told not to look an evil person in the face
because our souls will absorb some of that evil. Looking brings seeing. Not
that, G-d forbid, these Jews were being evil… they just urgently wanted to
go inside to pray…. Still, since they were going through such a tense time,
their faces expressed those extreme feelings.
“Instead, look toward the Kotel and the sky where all is still, calm,
and it will remind you to look for Hashem which is why you came here.”
