First, kudos to Dan Jones, who has done it again, finding a super rarity, in
this case, the Collared Plover at Hargill today (08/02/14). Those who may be
going in search of the Collared Plover might find it useful to know that in
addition to that great find there was present also, this afternoon, another
banded plover that may be considered substantially similar, even confusing,
on first study. Dan, in fact, mentioned on his blog that he initially
thought he probably had found a Wilson's Plover but developed serious doubts
that came to a head later in the day after a web search for Collared Plover
images. I thought it might be useful for seekers of the Collared Plover to
be aware of the presence there today (and potentially later) of a Wilson's
Plover--an interesting bird, in its own right, in this location. Indeed,
banded plovers seen there today included Collared Plover, Snowy Plover, and
Wilson's Plover. Some observers there today reported that they once had seen
the Collared Plover aggressively chase away from its vicinity a Wilson's
Plover. A bird willing to be that forthright with a sizeable, swift,
potential adversary, such as Wilson's Plover, may have the pertinacity to
stick around for awhile, weather permitting and if predators will stay away
as they seemed to today. Let us hope!

Best wishes to all who seek this exciting rarity!
