I actually doubt that this bird is all that unusual, but it certainly caught my eye. I found a female Lesser Scaup at Balmorhea State Park, reeves County, yesterday that had an obvious pale area on the side of the head that was reminiscent of a characteristic usually associated with Greater Scaup. In Greater Scaup this plumage feature is quite variable from being prominent to absent, so it is probably not a surprise that it could show up in Lesser Scaup as well.
