If I may quote Mark Knoffler (Dire Straights - My Party) referencing the posturing of the modern yuppie......... Let's hear it for the Polar Bears, Let's hear it for the trees Ain't runnin' out of nuthin' in my deep freeze Tom Fleming Grand Prairie, TX ________________________________ From: Joseph Kennedy <josephkennedy36@xxxxxxxxx> To: 4 Texbirds Maillist <texbirds@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thu, November 22, 2012 8:23:49 AM Subject: [texbirds] Re: the drought continues Note that the drought of 2011 actually started in the latter part of 2010. The drought now in late 2012 is much worse than that which started the great drought in late 2010. Houston is now 15 inches below normal since dry weather began in late spring and is actually 18 inches below normal in the last 12 months or so. and the general area has had some sort of drought in 5 of the last 8 years. The conditions are probably starting to rival those of the 1950's which were worse than the dust bowl in the immediate coastal area. When I was out in Colorado county last week, I had to keep the windows rolled up to try and keep the dust out. Even so it is surprising how much can come in during a short drive. The local rice farmers are preparing their fields for the spring and raising huge dust clouds in the process which can be seen from a mile or two away. But of course the LCRA has sort of told them that there will be no water again to protect the yuppies in Austin so that they can continue to race their speed boats around the lakes on weekends. But of course Austin is pro-environment except when it comes to restricting speed boat and other yuppy enjoyments. So what if many farmers go broke and lose their land and that there is no habitat for wildlife that depends on water. But they care and that is all that matters when recreation is at stake. -- Joseph C.
