Dear All, My apologies: I have gotten sidetracked by other matters (birds and bugs!) and fallen behind in answering my emails, so I'd like to use this to thank all of you who sent me information and photos of the woodpeckers at Sabine Woods this summer. To summarize: Initially in late May there was a male bird that could possibly have been: a) a hybrid with Red-headed (if so more likely a back-cross that was mostly Goldent-fronted). b) an aberrant or maybe acceptable variant of Texas Golden-fronted. c) a Golden-fronted from somewhere between Tamaulipas and the Yucatan that exhibits a set of features intermediate between the typical Texas-type birds and the very distinctive Yucatan birds. Soon afterwards, a phenotypically normal-looking (for Texas) joined it. They produced two offspring, a male and a female. By early October at least, the male offspring (now looking fully adult-like) and probably the parental female (now with aberrantly long bill) were still present (my own photos). Prior to 2012 there were no reports of Golden-fronted Woodpecker from Jefferson, Orange, Hardin, Newton, Tyler, Jasper, Sabine, San Augustine and Angelina Counties (per John Whittle). An adult female was recorded from nearby Texas Point NWR in March 2012, and some feel that this is the same female involved at Sabine Woods. I have not moved forward with any analysis or research, but I hope to soon. Best regards, and thanks again to all who replied to me on this matter, Martin --- Martin Reid San Antonio www.martinreid.com
