Dear Texbirders,
Some of you may remember my requests in the past few years for information on
titmice. Once again I would like to ask for your help. I am trying to find out
the nesting success of titmice across the hybrid zone between Tufted and
Black-crested Titmice. I have nestboxes at my main study sites in OK and TX
but the pesky birds just won’t cooperate (free rent is apparently not good
enough for them!). I am now trying for a broader look at their nesting
instead, counting fledgling groups at the sites while I’m out doing other
observations and using any titmouse nesting observations I can get from you
all.

and I’ll reply with details and a data sheet. I’m interested in nesting
observations from anywhere in the state (even if you can’t find the actual
nest, if it’s not in a nest box), as I need data from both species and hybrids
to make a comparison. Even just watching pairs, without finding the nest, is
useful if you can watch the same territory for more than one time period. I am
using a behavioral reproductive index that uses behavior to rank breeding
success with multiple observations (Vickery et al. 1992, for those of you
interested). If you are not sure what kind of titmouse you have, that’s fine
too (we can talk about it and/or I can determine based on location). Thanks for
