Pied-billed Grebes can produce a big sound, and one was putting on quite a show this morning near the Kiskadee Deck, where we also had decent views of an Altamira Oriole nest in a willow across the resaca. Best views are when the breeze blows. We headed to Quail Loop for a look at a White-tailed Kite. One Swainson's Hawk also put in a brief appearance. Plenty of nesting behavior going on in the park but not much migration-wise. Early arrivals for the walk were treated to close-up views of a bobcat near the feeding station. -- Sherry Wilson Resident Park Host Resaca de la Palma State Park 1000 New Carmen Road Brownsville, TX 78521 956-350-2920 Bird Walks every Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Butterfly Walks every Sunday - 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Night Hikes every Friday (must RSVP by 5:00 p.m. Thurs) - small fee Nature Tram Rides - Wednesday thru Sunday http://www.facebook.com/resacadelapalma DIRECTIONS: The main entrance to Resaca de la Palma State Park is located on New Carmen Blvd. From Expressway 77/83, exit at Olmito, take FM 1732, follow for 2.5 miles; turn left at New Carmen Road; follow for 1.5 miles; shortly after the gravel hump in the road, turn left to enter the park. *Learn how you can help Texas State Parks:* http://bit.ly/sVdilb Party Size: 7 Number of Species: 46 All Reported: true Comments: Here are the sightings you have submitted: Black-bellied Whistling-Duck 9 Gadwall 3 American Wigeon 2 Mottled Duck 1 Northern Shoveler 1 Plain Chachalaca 10 Pied-billed Grebe 6 Neotropic Cormorant 4 Double-crested Cormorant 2 Anhinga 3 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 1 Snowy Egret 1 Green Heron 1 Black Vulture 1 Turkey Vulture 3 Osprey 1 White-tailed Kite 2 Swainson's Hawk 1 American Coot 4 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Laughing Gull 3 Franklin's Gull 12 White-winged Dove 6 Mourning Dove 5 White-tipped Dove 2 Greater Roadrunner 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 Golden-fronted Woodpecker 1 Ladder-backed Woodpecker 2 Great Kiskadee 1 Couch's Kingbird 10 White-eyed Vireo 1 Green Jay 18 Barn Swallow 24 Cave Swallow 5 Carolina Wren 3 Northern Mockingbird 8 Long-billed Thrasher 3 Common Yellowthroat 1 Olive Sparrow 3 Northern Cardinal 2 Red-winged Blackbird 6 Great-tailed Grackle 28 Bronzed Cowbird 2 Altamira Oriole 4 TEXBIRDS help file and Texas birding links at: http://moonmountaingroup.com/texbirds Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds
