Greetings from Travis Audubon's Chaetura Canyon Sanctuary, We hosted the TOWN Austin group today for their annual breakfast / hike / lunch event. While setting up, we heard the first Chuck-will's-widow of the season calling at the head of the small canyon. It later called from down-canyon. On the first leg of the hike we encountered fledgling Bewick's Wrens and a male Indigo Bunting. A few Ruby-crowned Kinglets rattled in the canopy, and the first fledgling Northern Cardinals were out and about -- looking like they should still be in the nest. On the lower Canyon Rim Trail, a lone White-eyed Vireo called. We returned to the residence just as the small line of showers passed through the area. Lunch was enjoyed on the covered deck with the rain on the roof and Lesser Goldfinch fledglings being fed in the trees all around. The Canyon Wren babies hopped out in and out of their nest skittering across the nest shelf as we watched on the wren cam. Carolina Wren fledglings were heard but have yet to be seen. Cloudy, breezy, good birds, good people and a little rain. It was a good day at the Canyon. BTW: "TOWN" is the Texas Outdoor Women's Network (http://www.townaustin.org/files/index.htm).
