Thank you Clay. One of the ebird staff sent me a nice and helpful note earlier today suggesting to enter sightings only to county level for now. One of the other City of Austin volunteers now is working with the City of Austin staff to encourage them to work with ebird to create a method to enter data in a manner similar to that which you suggest, but we have to win them over first. Having said that, my note really was not about ebird, as I am a fan and remain so. The intent of my note, now re-enforced by Brush's note about the lack of support for birders visiting the TOS Sabine Woods, is try to change the mindset of some (more than a few?) birders. Having a big list with lots of ticks might be interesting, but in chasing birds, what was done to help the birds? How much was given to conserve the habitat compared to what was spent on gas chasing the birds? In Texas, we are fortunate still to have much wonderful bird habitat, which is critical to many species, but losses are occurring rapidly. Also, we are fortunate to have some good local groups working to save birds through advocacy, education, and when needed habitat purchase. Support TOS, Houston Audubon, and Travis Audubon as just a few of which I have personal knowledge and confidence. Chase birds, tick lists, and have fun, but please put the best interests of the birds first and give something back to the future. Good birding to all - except the bird poachers.
