Hi there, We spent a couple hours this morning birding Rice. Radar showed lots of birds migrating late last night, but around 2 AM we had a strong but brief downpour, heralding the front of the NWerly cold front. At 6 AM, radar was clear so all the birds looked like they had grounded (on previous days, radar shows birds migrating up until 645 AM). Sure enough, we had our best day ever this spring on campus. Seemed like birds were everywhere. Eleven warbler species and a very large flight of Swainson's Thrushes for such an urban area, the most I've ever seen at Rice. Although birds were everywhere, the weedlot at dawn was hopping with birds. The front entrance (entrance 1) was also very active. One tree was being watered and 2 Blackburnians, 1 Chestnut-sided, 3 Tennessees, 2 Black-throated Greens, 1 Summer Tanager and 1 Swainson's thrush were all at the drip. Look out in the trees wherever you are. Tomorrow morning may be equally good, especially if we get a rain late tonight. best C-T Lee, Houston Eastern Wood-Pewee 4 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 1 Acadian Flycatcher 2 Eastern Kingbird 2 Red-eyed Vireo 2 Barn Swallow 1 Swainson's Thrush 20 Black-and-white Warbler 1 Tennessee Warbler 3 Mourning Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 American Redstart 3 Magnolia Warbler 4 Blackburnian Warbler 4 Yellow Warbler 2 Chestnut-sided Warbler 2 Black-throated Green Warbler 4 Canada Warbler 1 Summer Tanager 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 2 Blue Grosbeak 2 Indigo Bunting 5 Dickcissel 2 Orchard Oriole 2 Baltimore Oriole 1
