Three species encountered this morning (04/22/13) at Delta Lake (Hidalgo County) may merit mention although they were not mentioned in our original report (posted today, 04/22/13, at about 4:00 PM): A single AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen on a distant sandbar near the south shore. At risk of introducing an oxymoron, a single astonishingly long-billed LONG-BILLED CURLEW seemed somewhat forlorn as it wandered about, absent any of its own kind (and even any Whimbrel, its physically smaller congener). Absence of conspecifics or similar species can undercut a sense of security and presumably the more so if, by size, one towers above other shorebirds in the area, potentially inviting the attention of raptors. At any rate, this particular individual surely was a female, given that females of this species have substantially longer bills than males. This individual seemed to us one of the longest-billed of its species we ever have seen. Another attractive and unique individual on the lake today was a FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCK. These three species are not intended to finish out a complete list of the species seen today, including of shorebirds. They are mentioned here simply for their possible interest.
