Yesterday's bird walk at Kleb was classic spring birding. The group of 17
observers found 47 species. There we a few lingering winter birds like
Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Chipping and White-throated Sparrows. Many residents
were extremely vocal and a pair of Brown-headed Nuthatches are scoping out a
dead pine. The stars of the day were raptors. One fast moving Swallow-tailed
Kite, 2 Coopers, likely staking out a territory, 1 Red-shouldered, 1 Broadwing,
2 Swainsons and2 Redtail. We also saw a Caracara. New arrivals for the week are
Great-crested Flycatcher and White-eyed Vireo. The highlight of the day was
the addition of a new species for the park list. Number 238 is Baird's
Sandpiper. Two birds flew by the hawk tower during our watch. They were
observed through about 160 degrees as the approached and then flew by. The
tower allowed us to get a background on them so they were not simply
silhouettes in the sky. Their very long wings and comparatively short body
eliminated all other peeps except White-rumped. Their rumps were not white. The
basic color pattern was seen well.
Our bird walks are every Wednesday from 8:30 to about 11 a.m. They are free and
all ages are welcome. Meet on the front steps of the nature center.
