This winter has been a very good one for Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers in the
central Trans-Pecos. This follows their increased occurrence on the South
Plains as Anthony has chronicled. I have encountered 13 different individuals
in Reeves, Jeff Davis, Brewster and Presidio Counties during December and early
January. This was particularly evident on Saturday when I found five different
birds in Big Bend National Park from Cottonwood Campground to Santa Elena
Canyon and up Terlingua Creek north of the Terlingua Abajo camping area.
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is annual in occurrence, but this is at least three
times the number of birds I would expect to find on a good winter. I did not
find anything else unexpected on my visit to Big Bend NP this weekend. I have
put photos of four of the various Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers from the last month
on my Flickr page for those you might be interested.
