Hello Texbirders,
This past Saturday we had a "World Shorebirds Day" celebration here at the
South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center (Cameron county). We
celebrated by hosting a free family day and 150+ visitors learned about
shorebirds through presentations, crafts, info posters, viewing areas with
spotting scopes thanks to our volunteers, and a shorebird count looking out
onto the salt flats just south of our first stretch of boardwalk.
I was a bit worried for most of the week prior because the spring tides
were awfully high and hardly any shorebirds were stopping by, but as the
day drew closer the tides started receding and they were just right to see
a great shorebird diversity when the day finally arrived.
A special thanks goes out to volunteers and counters; Madeleine Sandefur,
Bill Beaty, Bob Severson, Paula Parson, and Marilyn Lorenz for their help.
