Hi, all!

That was the highlight, as this bird was initially found a day or two ago
at Merle and Lois' feeder area at Salineno, a young bird that made a very
brief appearance again today. The Hooded Oriole pair also made an appearance
along with the regulars, but the other two orioles didn't show while I was
there (although an Altamira called down at the river and M&L reported
Audubon's earlier in the day).

And, yes, it was miserable out there to start; a light rain and breezy
conditions made birding Falcon State Park from the car a necessity! The most
productive place in the park was the bird blind, where a male Ladder-backed
Woodpecker came in to the PB, along with an Orange-crowned Warbler and a
greedy Long-billed Thrasher, amongst the hordes of blackbirds and House
Sparrows (and a handful of Inca and Collared Doves). Talked to Ellen a bit
who
said the Bobwhite came through earlier, and that donations of seed, PB, and
citrus are welcome!

From the picnic area you got a good view of the roiling, steamy Falcon
Lake, and over in one alcove was a feeding frenzy of White Pelicans,
cormorants, and gulls! I had to wind back past the boat ramp to get close
enough to
make out the gulls; most of them were Laughing, with a few pale
gray-mantled gulls that were probably Ringbills, but I just couldn't tell.
There was
at least one Neotropic Cormorant in the mix, and in the primitive camping
area I heard at least one White-fronted Goose go over, but I couldn't get a
visual. Both male and female Vermilion Flycatchers were a visual treat in
the dreary conditions!

Poking down the Dump Road was an adventure (got pretty slick there at one
point) but only added a curious Ruby-crowned Kinglet to the list. Before
visiting the aforementioned Merle & Lois (who showed me pictures of that
Zebra-striped Cross-streak--WOW!!), I spent about 15 minutes watching the river
(from the car, out of the wind) and only had Ringed Kingfisher and a few
Ospreys of note. Added a whistling Gray Hawk while sitting at the feeders.
