White-tailed Kites are nesting again in Rio Bosque Wetlands Park. They did not nest last year and I believe they tried but failed the year before. The first-documented beeding of these birds in El Paso County was, I believe, in 2010. The photo <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/89595062@N02/14466723965/player/"; width="640" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe> shows the pair perched about 35 yds from the nest. I observed the female fly to the nest and check on what are presumably eggs. She has been doing a lot of sitting on the nest in the past several days. Painted Buntings, Yellow-breasted Chats, and Bell's Vireos were singing, and I heard a Western Screech-owl at dawn. A rare-out-here Northern Cardinal flew in front of me and up to a perch and sang briefly. The Park is in much better shape than it has been during recent times. There is water flowing in the old Rio channel and the vegetation and birds are loving it.
