Greetings All:
I visited White River Lake this morning - with Drew Harvey - to conduct the
annual survey of recently discovered breeding species (Yellow-breasted
Chat, Field Sparrow, Summer Tanager, Indigo Bunting).
All highlights were from Crosby County.
On the way out we had one Common Raven just west of White River Lake.
Along the east roads we had 1 Bell's Vireo and 5 male Bronzed Cowbirds.
We walked the survey route in the wooded area north of the lake for about
three hours, covering 25% of the available habitat, and highlights were: 2
Scaled Quails, 3 Cattle Egrets, 1 adult Red-shouldered Hawk, 15
Yellow-billed Cuckoos, 1 Downy Woodpecker, 1 Least Flycatcher, 8 Bell's
Vireos, 1 Warbling Vireo, 1 Carolina Chickadee, 6 Carolina Wrens, 30
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 2 male Common Yellowthroats, 58 Yellow-breasted
Chats, 2 female/13 male/6 immature Field Sparrows, one pair and one solo
female Summer Tanagers, 5 female/14 male/9 immature Indigo Buntings, and 3
femela/3 male Bronzed Cowbirds.
Highlights from the west side included 1 Cackling Goose, 3 Cattle Egrets, 2
Inca Doves, 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 1 Bell's Vireo, and 1 Verdin.
Highlights on the way home: 2 American Avocets and 1 Spotted Sandpiper
south of Crosbyton.
