Hello Texbirders,
We continue to find rare western species on South Padre Island. A subadult
male *Broad-billed Hummingbird *was found at the SPI Convention Center by
visiting birders on Sunday 10/18, but was identified the next day 10/19 by
Mary Gustafson after a single photo of the bird's back circulated and
reached her. Bird was again seen and photographed the evening of 10/19 and
seen just for a short time this morning 10/20 with the last sighting being
around 9:10am. Looks like it could be one of just a few records if any of
this species in Cameron County. Especially with photos. Was really hoping
it would stick.

While trying to look for the BBHU at the neighboring South Padre Island
Birding & Nature Center this afternoon 10/20, I found an immature male *Hermit
Warbler* in the trees surrounding the parking lot. Was happy that birders
searching for the hummingbird got to come over and see the Hermit Warbler.

There is already a growing list of rare western birds that have shown up
lately on the island this fall: Painted Redstart, Scott's Oriole, Say's
Phoebe, Broad-billed Hummingbird, and Hermit Warbler.
It's been an incredibly interesting fall migration on the island so far as
we see what are surely signs of hard times out west.
