This is one of those birding koans I have pondered before also.
Like: if I find a dead bird and identify it, does that count for a list? Life,
day, etc?
If I find a sure fire proof of a certain bird (castings, call, feather, nest)
is that a sighting?
To me there is some part of birding pride that relates to luck and immediacy,
physically being able to get close enough to observe, or being in the right
place at the right time. Seeing a photo of a bird doesn't feel the same as
seeing the bird. A webcam I set up to spot something feels different than
logging someone else's site and watching theirs.
Listening to a live album doesn't feel the same as seeing my favorite band in
concert. But did I hear them perform? Audubon did a lot of his work based on
bird corpses. Did he kill them all himself? If so is that more or less evidence
"counting" him as a person who saw a particular species and identified it?
It's all a matter of personal choice, but logs and lists have room for noting
the nature of the sighting as well. Maybe "seen on my webcam" or "found by
fewmets" is an * after the listing. But knowledge gained is similar in nature,
and the enjoyment can be the same, and those are the parts of birding I value.

I actually watch it and the Puffin can on my 36 inch TV through my
computer, hummers are about 3 times life size that way.
I have been wondering, is birding by webcam any different than birding
on site? its hard to differentiate the difference to be with the
skills needed between being there and the web cam now.

On or around the day of the sighting clips from the web cam were available
showing the hummer visiting. Very impressive. Watching webcams is almost as
good as watching the birds. Got the hummer on a delay but had a
crimson-collared grosbeak a couple of years ago live on the sabal palm cam.
You can watch the hummer at. try in high def and full screen if the site
lets your browser do so.

Someone entered the webcam sighting into their eBird record, so the
record showed up on the rare bird report.
For those interested, A first record of Amethyst-throated Hummingbird
was seen on the West Texas Hummingbird webcam. This site is a private
residence and is not open to the public. The hummingbird was only seen
one more time I'm afraid.

I didn't see it anywhere on ebird. Could you post a link? If you go toCornell's webpage there's info there about the sighting.
