Hey there,
I did a little birding in my way to see the eared quetzals yesterday (which
was successful!).
Hiked smith springs trail at Guadalupe NP first thing with a Warbling Vireo
right at Manzanita spring, and Cassin’s Finch on the way up. Smith Springs
has tons of birds right now, almost all of which are Hermit Thrushes. Hard
to move without stepping on one. It was nice to see some birds from higher
elevation, including a hairy woodpecker and Stellers Jay‘s. Highlight for
me was a Hammond’s flycatcher at the Springs, foraging in the canopy. State
bird for me! I made a quick stop at frijole Ranch again, and had mountain
chickadees and a brief glimpse of an oriole, which was either Baltimore or
bullocks.
Made a quick stop at Dell city, and the surrounding area. Lots of
agricultural land, with lots of water. Had some good water birds, including
wood ducks, but the highlight was definitely an immature red shouldered
hawk. Per eBird this is a first county record for Hudspeth. Also had a
Western Tanager at the fruiting trees by the high school.
Also stopped at memorial park in El Paso, which definitely has some good
potential. Thanks to Richard for suggesting it. Pretty good activity,
highlight was a black throated gray warbler.
