The Calliope Hummingbird observed yesterday in Zachary Taylor Park in Rockport, TX was again observed late this morning (~11:20 to11:30 am) by the seven members of the Golden Triangle Audubon Society who saw it yesterday. It was rather consistently visiting the Russelia equisetiformis blossoms around the small magnolia tree close to the gazebo. It consistently perched on dead twigs in the mid portions of the tree, while flycatching small insects. Occasionally it retreated to oak trees in the nearby corner of the park. It was most easily observed from the gazebo, and due to the arrangement of its favorite perches, the bird presented itself face-on towards the gazebo, allowing view of its two magenta pencil gorget feathers on the left side. These feathers would be especially useful field marks for observers in verifying id (i.e., distinguishing it from Selasphorus rufus/sasin) if finer features cannot be ascertained. Below: photos from today, showing a short tail (wing tips extending past tail), white over gape, spatulate central retrices, and gorget feathers. http://hstewart.smugmug.com/Nature/Birding-Trips/Rockport-September-2013/31859107_5P4qMN#!i=2766068226&k=3hdcCmP http://hstewart.smugmug.com/Nature/Birding-Trips/Rockport-September-2013/31859107_5P4qMN#!i=2766068289&k=9wpMw5T http://hstewart.smugmug.com/Nature/Birding-Trips/Rockport-September-2013/31859107_5P4qMN#!i=2766069054&k=W5NGKkJ HArlan Stewart Nederland, TexasEdit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
