TexBirders, There is nothing unconfirmed about these 2 flamingos. Diagnostic photos that show the band letters/numbers have already been sent to the Secretary of the TBRC and the bander in Mexico has been notified of the sighting. It is indeed the odd pair that has been roaming the Gulf Coast from Baffin Bay, TX to Louisiana since 2006. Over the years these flamingos have spent a lot of time in Calhoun Co. at different locations. The current spot is a well vegetated dredge island in Lavaca Bay, placement area 16, aka Snake Island. It is 1.1 mile north of the bluff at the end of Washington Ave. (FM 2717) in Alamo Beach, Calhoun County. With a good scope one can see the different species of birds nesting currently on the island and if a flamingo would be present on the shoreline that faces Alamo Beach it would be possible to identify although without many details. There is a small lagoon on the island and the shoreline on the other side is not visible due to the tall vegetation. The island is currently shock full of breeding herons, egrets, ibis, spoonbills etc. and can not be accessed on foot. One would have to drive around it and bird from a boat/kayak. This island is also interesting since it contains the only known breeding colony of Glossy Ibis. This year's count again produced several pair and last Sunday I found at least 4 in a group of ca. 80 plegadis ibis feeding in a rice field along FM 2717. I sincerely hope that whoever decides to look for the flamingos by boat or kayak will respect this important colonial breeding colony and not set foot on it or approach it too closely.
