On a cold morning with ice covering most of the marshes we found 75 species.
The only open water to speak of was off the end of Sandy Point. There we were
rewarded with a group of 37 Hooded Mergansers feeding with 11 Red-Breasted
Mergansers and 93 Ruddy Ducks. Also seen there were 15 Canvasbacks. The only
other open water with a lot of birds was Deaver Pond which contained a good
assortment of ducks including over 100 Northern Shovelers, 10 Wood Ducks along
with Hooded Mergansers, Northern Pintails, Ring-necked Ducks, Green-winged
Teal, Redheads, Gadwalls, Mallards, Lesser Scaup and a Pied-billed Grebe. We
also saw a Belted Kingfisher at Deaver.
