[texbirds] Tuesday morning birding, Hagerman NWR

On a gorgeous winter day with a pleasant chill in the air, very light wind and 
lots of sunshine we experienced an incredible morning of birding.  You can tell 
that the lake is starting to recede although slowly.  It will be quite a while 
before Wildlife drive will be open.  So we once again had to bird the perimeter 
of the refuge.  There is a big difference this winter compared to last winter, 
that being an abundance of berries on most of the trees and vines this year.  
We saw birds feeding almost everywhere we looked.  We saw at least 50 Pine 
Siskins feeding on some feeders near headquarters along with American 
Goldfinches and a Purple Finch. We found a Hooded Merganser on a pond near 
Keefer and Hagerman Roads.
Near the Hagerman Cemetery we found another group of Purple Finches feeding 
with House Finches and Cedar Waxwings.  Near there we also saw a couple of 
Brewers Blackbirds with at Least seven Eurasian Colared-Doves. When we arrived 
at Goode we were treated to a mature Bald Eagle. Three vociferous Pileated 
Woodpeckers were flying in a line over the tree line.  The resident Red-headed  
Woodpecker was close for all to see.  We finished the day with 75 species and a 
lot of happy birders.
