[texbirds] Tuesday morning bird census, Hagerman NWR

It was unseasonably warm but a breeze was blowing which helped to make it
not so uncomfortable.  We started the day with a short walk on Harris Creek
Trail and across the creek in the dead trees there was a lot of activity.
As we were observing Eastern Bluebirds, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Downy
Woodpeckers, a Hairy Woodpecker, a Blue Grossbeak, an Indigo Bunting and
Red-bellied Woodpeckers a flock of about 25 Dickcissels flew into a tree,
undoubtedly migrating birds.  We found a Hairy Woodpecker and a Northern
Flicker on the way to the Goode area along with Inca Doves and the usual
resident birds there.  Silliman Marsh is getting low on water but we found
the Sora there, once again, feeding in the edge of the cattails on the west
side of the marsh.  While there we had a flyby Northern Harrier.  There
were also White-faced Ibis there and American Coots as well as 2 American
Avocets.  When on the crossover between Tern and Egret pads we watched a
Bald Eagle soaring.  There we also saw many Neotropic Cormorants, 90 in
total for the day. There was a flock of ducks, mostly Blue-winged
Teal across from the observation deck on Egret Pad.   That was also a
productive area for shorebirds with Long-billed dowitchers, Stilt
Sandpipers, Black-bellied Plover, Pectoral Sandpipers, Wilson Snipes, Least
Sandpipers, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs.  There was one Solitary
Sandpiper in Muleshoe Marsh. The Black-crowned Night-Herons continue in
the cattails, near the main road, in Mineral Marsh. We found American
Kestrels and Loggerhead Shrikes  on the roads west of the refuge.  We
finished the day with 66 species.
