Hi Texbirders, Like many other who work, this was my first chance to go look for the bird. I lucked in. After getting lost on the County Roads, I arrived at 9:15 and the handful of birders said it had showed. I got my tripod set and not 30 seconds later he flew into the grass at the right side of the road. http://www.pbase.com/davidmcd/image/158847277 A moment later he flew into the brush on the left side, although several people said he was on the fence, I didn't see him. About 1 minute later, he flew down to the road. he then jumped closer to the middle of the road and the rest of the birds. Here he is pre-jump. http://www.pbase.com/davidmcd/image/158847280 He landed in the middle of the road and stood erect.. http://www.pbase.com/davidmcd/image/158847281 And another ... http://www.pbase.com/davidmcd/image/158847283 It was all over in less then 3 minutes. From 9:30 to 12 he didn't reappear, disappointing the many birders, by this time (about 30) However, I did get a nice photo of a Harris's Sparrow. They are really pretty. http://www.pbase.com/davidmcd/image/158847285 I left to look for the Longspurs at the sod farm near Brenham. I larked out there. It is a huge place and they probably move around. All I found were Savannah Sparrows, Meadowlarks, Kestrels and several Horned Larks. They always deserve a photo... http://www.pbase.com/davidmcd/image/158847287 Best of luck to those looking for the Striped Sparrow tomororw. Get there early if possible and be patient.
