I went out for a little while this afternoon with my young grandson to see what
had arrived in my favorite areas north of Lake Granger. My favorite pond
between the Alligator Lane and Alligator Road - Aubrey Messer had NO birds. I
usually get snipes, and least sandpipers, killdeers, greater yellowlegs, etc
and in the winter some ducks - today not a bird! Brownheaded cowbirds were
back in large numbers and one very large starling flock. I think there were
brewer’s blackbirds - but I did not get great looks at the blackbirds other
than the cowbirds and starlings. I was glad to see kestrels and loggerhead
shrikes regularly. I saw a FOS northern harrier as well.

Murphy Park does not have as much variety of species as during the summer, but
the fly in is still fun to watch. My young grandson enjoyed listening to the
music from the concert in the park and watching the birds fly in. I was
pleased to see 3 white faced ibis and 3 tri-colored herons. Most of the egrets
were cattle egrets, but by dark about 20 great egrets and a great blue heron
had come in. And there were a few still white little blue heron juveniles.
There is a lone Ross’ goose which came right up to the picnic table with the
domestic geese hoping for a handout. I saw him this summer . . . Sad to see him
without any other Ross or snow geese around - closest I’ve ever been to a
Ross’s goose - got good cell phone photos he was so close.

Total count was 21 species with over 400 individual birds
