Greetings All: Here is the ninth summary of my 2013 game. September usually sees a bigger pickup in waterfowl, a continuation of whatever shorebird season is happening (a very poor one for us this year), and a major increase in migrant songbirds. The performance of other taxa depends on weather (late summer/early autumn rains) and things remained just green enough that I found a few goodies in the patch - CBC-sized and centered at Quaker Avenue and 34th Street in Lubbock. August kicked out 46 species of butterfly, 3 species of amphibian, 11 species of reptile, 141 species of bird, and 13 species of mammal. My goals for the year were 50 species of butterfly, 5 species of amphibian, 10 species of reptile, 250 species of bird, and 15 species of mammal by the end of the year. By the end of July, I had tallied 63 species of butterfly (126%), 9 species of amphibian (180%), 21 species of reptile (210%), 251 species of bird (100% and a hair), and 24 species of mammal 160%). The rate of success for amphibians, reptiles, and mammals has been far better than I expected and October could, conceivably, yield a few more in each category. The following list includes all the critters seen in my patch during July and additions to the cumulative list are indicated with an * Funereal Duskywing Common Checkered Skipper Common Sootywing Orange Skipperling Least Skipper* Fiery Skipper Sachem Nysa Roadside Skipper Dotted Roadside Skipper Eufala Skipper Pipevine Swallowtail Black Swallwtail Giant Swallowtail Cabbage White Checkered White Orange Sulphur Southern Dogface Cloudless Sulphur Little Yellow* Mexican Yellow* Sleepy Orange Dainty Sulphur Gray Hairstreak Marine Blue Western Pygmy Blue Reakirt's Blue Lupine Blue* American Snout Monarch Queen Gulf Fritillary Variegated Fritillary Hackberry Emperor Bordered Patch Phaon Crescent Pearl Crescent Viceroy Common Mestra* Common Buckeye Question Mark Mourning Cloak Red Admiral Painted Lady American Lady Goatweed Leafwing Great Plains Toad Plains Spadefoot* American Bullfrog Common Snapping Turtle Red-eared Slider Spiny Soft-shelled Turtle Eastern Fence Lizard Texas Horned Lizard Great Plains Skink Six-lined Racerunner Plain-bellied Water Snake Checkered Garter Snake Coachwhip Gopher Snake Cackling Goose Canada Goose Wood Duck Gadwall American Wigeon Mallard Blue-winged Teal Cinnamon Teal Northern Shoveler Green-winged Teal Ruddy Duck Northern Bobwhite Scaled Quail Pied-billed Grebe Double-crested Cormorant Great Blue Heron Great Egret Snowy Egret Little Blue Heron Tricolored Heron Cattle Egret Green Heron Black-crowned Night Heron Yellow-crowned Night Heron White-faced Ibis Turkey Vulture Osprey Mississippi Kite Northern Harrier Cooper's Hawk Harris's Hawk Swainson's Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Sora American Coot Sandhill Crane Killdeer Black-necked Stilt American Avocet Spotted Sandpiper Greater Yellowlegs Lesser Yellowlegs Semipalmated Sandpiper Western Sandpiper Least Sandpiper Baird's Sandpiper Long-billed Dowitcher Wilons's Phalarope Ring-billed Gull Black Tern Forster's Tern Rock Pigeon Eurasian Collared Dove White-winged Dove Mourning Dove Inca Dove Greater Roadrunner Great Horned Owl Burrowing Owl Common Nighthawk Chimney Swift Black-chinned Hummingbird Belted Kingfisher Ladder-backed Woodpecker Northern Flicker American Kestrel Merlin Peregrine Falcon Olive-sided Flycatcher Western Wood Pewee Willow Flycatcher Least Flycatcher Dusky Flycatcher Cordilleran Flycatcher Ash-throated Flycatcher Western Kingbird Eastern Kingbird* Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Bell's Vireo Cassin's Vireo Blue-headed Vireo* Warbling Vireo Blue Jay Northern Rough-winged Swallow Violet-green Swallow* Bank Swallow Barn Swallow Cave Swallow Cliff Swallow Marsh Wren House Wren Bewick's Wren Carolina Wren Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Swainson's Thrush Hermit Thrush American Robin Gray Catbird Northern Mockingbird Curve-billed Thrasher European Starling American Pipit Northern Waterthrush Ovenbird Black-and-white Warbler Orange-crowned Warbler Nashville Warbler MacGillivray's Warbler Mourning Warbler* Common Yellowthroat Yellow Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler Townsend's Warbler Wilson's Warbler Spotted Towhee Canyon Towhee Cassin's Sparrow Chipping Sparrow Clay-colored Sparrows Brewer's Sparrows Vesper Sparrow Lark Sparrow Lincoln's Sparrow Western Tanager Northern Cardinal Blue Grosbeak Lazuli Bunting Indigo Bunting Painted Bunting Dickcissel Red-winged Blackbird Western Meadowlark Brewer's Blackbird Common Grackle Great-tailed Grackle Bronzed Cowbird Brown-headed Cowbird Orchard Oriole Bullock's Oriole Baltimore Oriole* House Finch Lesser Goldfinch American Goldfinch House Sparrow Black-tailed Jackrabbit Desert Cottontail Eastern Cottontail Eastern Gray Squirrel Black-tailed Prairie Dog Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel Mexican Ground Squirrel North American Deermouse* House Mouse Hispid Cotton Rat Gray Fox Raccoon Striped Skunk Anthony 'Fat Tony' Hewetson; Lubbock Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
