Greetings All: This goal of this year's game is to see how many butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals I can see in my 'patch': a circle, with a radius of 7.5 miles, centered on the intersection of Quaker Avenue and 34th Street in Lubbock, Texas. All of Lubbock's in-town playas, the entire run of the Canyon Lakes of Lubbock, and a lot of urban/suburban parks are in my patch with some agricultural/prairie patches around the periphery. I don't quite get Buffalo Springs Lake or City Farms to the east but I do get Reese Center to the west - this game will provide me with an incentive to learn exactly how Reese Center is birded. I decided to set my goals high - failure is definitely an option: 50 species of butterfly, 5 species of amphibian, 10 species of reptile, 250 species of bird, and 15 species of mammal by the end of 2013. The first month saw visits to the Canyon Lakes and the in-town playas of Lubbock, with Clapp Park being the most productive of the in-town parks. The following list includes all critters (1 butterfly, 101 bird, 5 mammal species) seen in my patch during the month.
