Greetings All:
This year's competition: Rich Kostecke's Austin yard vs. Anthony Hewetson's
Lubbock yard. The rules: anything that can be seen from the yards (no
restrictions to yard 'airspace'), heard birds subject to review and
agreement, no eye gouging, and no birding below the belt.
Rich ended September with 76 species and October delivered unto him Eastern
Phoebe and Indigo Bunting, bringing him up to 78 species for 2016.
Anthony ended September with 85 species and and October delivered unto him
NOTHING NEW (save for some butterflies), leaving him stuck at 85 species
for 2016.
Hewetson is down to scanning the skies, desperately, for anything new
amidst the migrating American Robins and the hordes of European Starlings
and Icterids that have set up roosts in or near his neighborhood and
Kostecke is down to, well, spending some time looking for late fall
wanderer and arriving winterers in his well-forested yard. We are in
agreement that spring and fall songbird migrations were pretty dismal for
both of us (great weather, in both seasons, for migrants - horrible weather
for birders) and I don't think either of us expects to make it to our
dreamed of goal of 100 species in/over our yards in a year.
