Greetings All:
This year's competition: Rich Kostecke's Austin yard vs. Anthony Hewetson's
Lubbock yard. The rules: anything that can be seen from the yards (no
restrictions to yard 'airspace'), heard birds subject to review and
agreement, no eye gouging, and no birding below the belt.
Rich ended April with 61 species and by the end of May, as expected,
maintained a lead (though the lead was not as sizable as it could have been
in a better year for migrant songbird detection), by adding Wilson's
Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Yellow-billed Cuckoo,
Blue-headed Vireo, Tennessee Warbler, Common Nighthawk, Philadelphia Vireo,
Bronzed Cowbird, and Chestnuit-sided Warbler to his list and moving on up
to 71 species.
He claims this is not a good migrant list but it looks pretty damned tasty
to me!
Anthony ended April with 58 species and actually managed to add twelve
species (Chimney Swift, Great Egret, Wilson's Warbler, Common Nighthawk,
House Wren, Cassin's Kingbird, Nashville Warbler, Clay-colored Sparrow,
American White Pelican, Dickcissel, Franklin's Gull, and Cliff Swallow),
closing the gap a bit and ending May with 70 species on the old yard list.
I predict very little in the way of additions to either yard list during
June (the slowest month for both regions as we are down to breeding
residents; most of which are already on our lists) ... and that fall
migration will tell all.
