Greetings All:
This year's competition: Rich Kostecke's Austin yard vs. Anthony Hewetson's
Lubbock yard. The rules: anything that can be seen from the yards (no
restrictions to yard 'airspace'), heard birds subject to review and
agreement, no eye gouging, and no birding below the belt.
Rich ended June with 71 species and by the end of July, had managed to add
one new species (Least Flycatcher), bringing him up to 72 for the year.
Anthony ended June with 73 species and achieved an 'even more commanding'
lead by snagging two new species (Rufous Hummingbird, Calliope
Hummingbird), making it all the way up to 75 species, so far, for the yard
in 2016.
By the end of August, songbird migrants should start happening for Rich and
odd waterbirds overhead might kick in for me. With drought kicking in in
my region (not great for wandering waders) fortune might favor Rich
overtaking me at some point but, it's closer than I thought it would be, so
who knows.
