Greetings All:
This year's competition: Rich Kostecke's Austin yard vs. Anthony Hewetson's
Lubbock yard. The rules: anything that can be seen from the yards (no
restrictions to yard 'airspace'), heard birds subject to review and
agreement, no eye gouging, and no birding below the belt.
Rich ended January with 28 species (Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Cooper's
Hawk, White-winged Dove, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker,
Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, American Crow,
Carolina Chickadee, Black-crested Titmouse, Canyon Wren, Carolina Wren,
Bewick's Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Mockingbird, European
Starling, Cedar Waxwing, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler,
Dark-eyed Junco, Northern Cardinal, Great-tailed Grackle, House Finch,
Lesser Goldfinch, American Goldfinch, and House Sparrow) - a nice solid
base for a hoped for 100 species.
Anthony edged Rich out a bit with 30 species (Snow Goose, Ross's Goose,
Cackling Goose, Canada Goose, Northern Shoveler, Double-crested Cormorant,
Great Blue Heron, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Ring-billed Gull, Rock
Pigeon, Eurasian Collared Dove, White-winged Dove, Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, Northern Flicker, Blue Jay, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, American
Robin, Northern Mockingbird, European Starling, Cedar Waxwing, Lincoln's
Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Northern Cardinal,
Red-winged Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle, House Finch, Pine Siskin, and
House Sparrow) - a nice solid base for a hoped for more than 100 species.
Our advantages: woodland birds for Rich and flyovers for Anthony are
already much in evidence.
