Thanks, Joe.
Seems to happen in late winter/spring as the birders from the "Old World"
arrive on tour. But, novice birders might also add some of those "new"
species to the state list.

If you pay close attention to the ebird reports, Texas has picked up a few
new species in the last month. Without a lot more details/photos, this
goes in the misidentified category.

Howdy Texbirders,
This morning while perusing my eBird needs list, I saw the following which
caused me pause: "Southern Caracara (1 Harris)".
I would appreciate any comments regarding AOU and/or ABA reasons for the
change in nomenclature. DNA based? I understand the rules involving
nomenclature, etc. those subspecies names, initial name vs. later names,
etc. The range maps and information on various web sites seems to be a bit
confusing as to whether we in Texas have the Southern Caracara or the
Northern Caracara. I realize that this is trivial, but I was unaware that
a name change had occurred. Will these populations be split? (Ha! what a
field id nightmare that would be)
I will do some more research, but would appreciate clarifying comments from
knowledgeable Texbirders regarding our Texas "Crested" Caracaras.
Thanks
Dennis
