Hi, all!
Had the day off for some alone time birding - only I wasn't all that "alone"
at South Padre! :-D The flats just north of the Convention Centre were
finally driveable (i.e., the tide was out - still looked kinda scary for
your average vehicle), and they held a good variety of shorebirds: four
kinds of plovers in breeding plumage, courting terns, and pink-bellied
Franklin's Gulls were all fun to see, along with my first Black and Common
Terns for the year. No unusual sandpipers - just several Sanderlings and
Dunlin, and a lone Ruddy Turnstone.
It was slow at the Convention Centre to start, but the migrants waited for
Sue Griffin and Alicia Cavazos to show up to start moving! J There were
lots of Yellows, but they shortly started spotting Tennessees, a
Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green, Nashville, and a Blackpoll Warbler!
Other goodies there (both in the morning and during the afternoon shift)
included the continuing Cape May Warbler that seemed addicted to this one
orange on the "citrus bar," Blackburnian Warbler, Yellow-billed Cuckoo,
Gray-cheeked Thrush, Northern Waterthrush, and lots of Baltimore Orioles.
The boardwalk had some nice waders and a cooperative Sora, and a run-in with
San Diego buddies Tony Merceica and Vic Murayama resulted in their showing
me the baby Least Bitterns! I ran into some guests from the Alamo Inn B&B
Gear & Tours who were thrilled at getting a photo of their life Clapper Rail
out in the open!
Sheepshead was really jumping with a report of a Cerulean and MacGillivray's
Warbler, but in the course of two visits got to enjoy a female Golden-winged
Warbler, a Mourning Warbler jumping around for bugs, in-your-face American
Redstarts, Black-and-whites, a Magnolia, Northern Parula, tons of female
Painted Buntings, and a bath-time line-up of orioles in every conceivable
plumage at the water feature! Wound up with 101 species for the day!
