My family and I spent the Memorial Day weekend camping at South Llano River SP.
It was a beautiful weekend with mild temperatures...especially compared to the
barn burner a year ago. Unfortunately, it is pretty dry, but nothing compared
to a year ago. The birding was fantastic as always with the park bird blinds
always producing a steady flow of birds. I think this may actually be the
first
time in 10 years that I have spent a weekend in the park without physically
seeing a single wild turkey. Only heard a gobble briefly.

I was greeted early Saturday morning with a MacGillivray's warbler at the
Juniper blind and believe I had a Mourning warbler at the Agarita blind on
Monday morning. I would like some confirmation on the Mourning as it was
similar to all those that confused everyone last fall (it really does not have
broad eye arcs and has a complete eyeing as well as a short tail). I ended up
with five warbler species and did not bother to walk the trails back by the
deer
blinds to look for a Golden-cheeked warbler. I don't think I have ever seen so
many Bell's vireos before as they seemed to be lining up for their turn at the
water features. Black-capped, Yellow-throated, and White-eye vireos also made
appearances. The number of Blue Grosbeak's in the park also seemed to be much
higher than I remember in past years and Summer Tanagers were very easy finds
just about anywhere in the park.

Bullock's Oriole was an easy find at the Junction Tennis Courts along with
singing Cassin's sparrows. The trees around the tennis courts and out in the
field also hold an amazing number of Golden-fronted woodpeckers.

Easter Pagent Hill actually seemed pretty quite compared to prior years, but it
was windy this weekend and this hillside was exposed to the wind. The Varied
Bunting was seen, but only offered distance photos as well as several skittish
Scott's Orioles.
