TexBirders,
While traveling back from West Texas this afternoon, I meandered through some
back roads and had the following encounters:
Sonora (Sutton Co.) - I had one probably male Mountain Bluebird just on the NE
side of Sonora, on CR 202 about 0.5 mi N of Interstate-10. I watched the all
sky-blue male fly off to the north and could not relocate it nor any other
bluebirds. The area adjacent to the road is low mesquite brush with some
mistletoe; there is low juniper-oak woodland on the hills flanking the road
some distance off.
Menard (Menard Co.) - The Menard WTP on the E side of town along FM 2092 had a
Least Grebe on the E-most pond at about 3:15 p.m. today, along with about 25
diving ducks and one Wood Duck hen. I got digiscoped images of the grebe and
will upload those with my eBird checklist later this evening. I haven’t
checked records yet to see if this is a new report.
The vast majority of the road trip (except for my destination site) was nearly
birdless for hundreds of miles.
