Greetings All: A Wood Duck was reported from Clapp Park on 7/5/12 - the second July record for our entire fifteen county region. These breed as close as the northeastern Panhandle and have been suspected of breeding in our region - probably a postbreeding wanderer. A subadult (probably Red-naped) Sapsucker was reported at Lubbock State School on 7/5/12 - the first July record of any kind of sapsucker for the fifteen county region. These breed as close as east slope of the Rockies in nearby New Mexico and Colorado; a wanderer but wandering for what reason? A Northern Waterthrush was reported from Ransom Lake on 7/4/12 - the second July record for the entire fifteen county region and considerably earlier than the previous July report which was from 7/26/86. This is ridiculously early for a post-breeding wanderer to our region and the reporter wondered if it was a late north-bound migrant or a bird that just didn't complete migration this year. Throw these in with the late June records of American Redstart and Yellow Warbler - unprecedented in our region - and we are having a pretty odd summer this year. Anthony 'Fat Tony' Hewetson; Lubbock
