Greetings All:
I spent a good chunk of the day chasing critters along the Canyon Lakes of
Lubbock.

Highlights from a long walk along the river below Lake Six included 1 male
Cinnamon Teal, 1 Snowy Egret, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Common Poorwill, 1
House Wren, 1 Hermit Thrush, 1 Curve-billed Thrasher, 1 Louisiana
Waterthrush, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler, 1 Grasshopper Sparrow, and 3
White-throated Sparrows.

The river is very low, with exposed banks and islands in places I've ne'er
seen before. The Spotted Sandpiper was in an odd location - instead of
being just downstream from Lake Six it was on an island about half way down
to Loop 289. The Louisiana Waterthrush was also in an odd spot - instead
of the typical location under the bowers of Siberian Elm just below the
lake it was working a clot of drowned tumbleweed just upstream from the
lowest bridge before the loop.

Lake Six kicked out a couple of goodies - 1 Great Egret and 1 Common
Gallinule.

Mae Simmons Park also kicked out a couple of goodies - 3 Cackling Geese
and, amongst a small horde of Barn Swallows, a single Bank Swallow.

MacKenzie Park was kicking and I walked the river all the way up to The
Parkway. Highlights included 1 Osprey, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2 Greater
Yellowlegs, 3 Say's Phoebes (all within a stone's throw of the covered
picnic facility), 1 House Wren, 1 Hermit Thrush, 3 Wilson's Warblers, and 1
Chipping Sparrow.

The lower reaches of the Purina Mountain Bike Trail were also very nice
(and I was joined during the latter half of a two plus hour visit by a
Yucca Giant Skipper-seeking Steve Collins). My highlights included 2
Godlen-fronted Woodpeckers (this is the only dependable site within the
loop so far as I know), 1 Western Wood Pewee, 1 Plumbeous Vireo (also seen
by Steve Collins), 3 Carolina Wrens, 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 2 Hermit
Thrushes, 7 Wilson's Warblers, 40 Chipping Sparrows, and 2 Brewer's
Sparrows.

Not too shabby for a drought-stricken, dust-plagued patch badly in need of
a toad choker.
