[texbirds] Shorebirding the western South Plains

Greetings,

I birded Smyer Playa and Muleshoe NWR this afternoon in hopes of finding
some good shorebirds. Both places are prime for shorebirds right now.

Highlights

Smyer Playa (Hockley Co.):
Black-necked Stilt - 29 including some cute little babies
American Avocet - 27
Spotted Sandpiper - 3
Solitary Sandpiper - 1
Least Sandpiper - 6
Baird's Sandpiper 3
Stilt Sandpiper - 6 This is the earliest I have had these in the region.
Wilson's Phalarope - 1
Black Tern - 1


Muleshoe NWR Paul's Lake (Bailey Co.):
Gadwall - 1 ratty looking female
Snowy Plover - 7
American Avocet - 17
Spotted Sandpiper - 1 Upper Paul's Lake
Solitary Sandpiper - 1 Upper Paul's Lake
Western Sandpiper - 48
Least Sandpiper - 3 Upper Paul's Lake
Baird's Sandpiper - 23
Wilson's Phalarope - 1
