And cooper's hawks around the corner and at Smith Point hunt under security
lights for grounded bugs especially if there is a little water to
immobilize them.

midnight, might have continued even beyond, going after bugs that landed
around the group iluminated by a street light. Probably any insect-eating,
urban living bird has learned to take advantage of civilization.
On a related note, English House Sparrows used apartment laundry vents,
which had to be tossed open in mid flight, and then the nearby security
lights for locating food. Youngsters must have felt they lived in Alaska,
with the 24 hour sun.

I suppose many observers have become familiar with this behavior during
all night vigils at hospitals, taking breaks to walk off stress in the

Scissortails, Western Kingbirds and other species taking advantage of the
lights.
Since one reason birds come north to breed is extended daylight so that
they can forage for more young, it makes perfect sense for them to take
this advantage. Since most temperate climates are now so well lit, I wonder
if birds are now taking advantage of night lights generally. Will they and
future species adapt to lights as oppose to latitude?
