Hi, all! Couldn't get the key to the tank-stopping gate to work, so I opted to do the hiking survey, which I haven't done for at least two years, and it was great to get back on the trail again! Had a nice variety of waders, including about a dozen Yellow-crowned Night Herons of all ages, as well as a Green Kingfisher on one of the smaller Pintail Lakes. Was surprised by the detour along the river--apparently there was quite the cave-in! Clay-colored Thrushes were relatively "out the yin yang" with a pair in the parking lot, another couple of pairs along the Willow/Chachalaca Trails, and then another pair closer to the "roundabout". Three different Beardless Tyrannulets called, and it was nice seeing Bank Swallows over the main lake. The most unusual thing was a Red-shouldered Hawk yelling in the distance; they should be long gone by now, but apparently I've logged them in the summer before. Got dripped on a little--we need the rain! It wasn't even 10:00 by the time I finished that, so headed on up to Wallace Road just to do some road birding; best bird along this stretch was a Swainson's Hawk. Blue Grosbeaks, Painted Buntings, and Dickcissels were all nice summer-time birds, expected along this route. A low-flying Chimney Swift was new for my Monte Cristo list. The wetlands were bone dry. :-( Bird list for the morning: Black-bellied Whistling-Duck Dendrocygna autumnalis Fulvous Whistling-Duck Dendrocygna bicolor Mottled Duck Anas fulvigula Blue-winged Teal Anas discors Plain Chachalaca Ortalis vetula Northern Bobwhite Colinus virginianus Least Grebe Tachybaptus dominicus Pied-billed Grebe Podilymbus podiceps Neotropic Cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus Great Egret Ardea alba Cattle Egret Little Blue Heron Egretta caerulea Tricolored Heron Egretta tricolor Green Heron Butorides virescens Yellow-crowned Night-Heron Nyctanassa violacea White Ibis Eudocimus albus Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura Red-shouldered Hawk Buteo lineatus Gray Hawk Buteo plagiatus Swainson's Hawk Buteo swainsoni Common Gallinule Gallinula galeata Black-necked Stilt Himantopus mexicanus Killdeer Charadrius vociferus White-winged Dove Zenaida asiatica Mourning Dove Zenaida macroura Inca Dove Columbina inca Common Ground-Dove Columbina passerina White-tipped Dove Leptotila verreauxi Yellow-billed Cuckoo Coccyzus americanus Groove-billed Ani Crotophaga sulcirostris Common Nighthawk Chordeiles minor Chimney Swift Chaetura pelagica Green Kingfisher Chloroceryle americana Golden-fronted Woodpecker Melanerpes aurifrons Ladder-backed Woodpecker Picoides scalaris Crested Caracara Caracara cheriway Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet Camptostoma imberbe Brown-crested Flycatcher Myiarchus tyrannulus Great Kiskadee Pitangus sulphuratus Tropical Kingbird Tyrannus melancholicus Couch's Kingbird Tyrannus couchii White-eyed Vireo Vireo griseus Green Jay Cyanocorax yncas Loggerhead Shrike Horned Lark Eremophila alpestris Bank Swallow Riparia riparia Cave Swallow Petrochelidon fulva Black-crested Titmouse Baeolophus atricristatus Verdin Auriparus flaviceps Carolina Wren Thryothorus ludovicianus Bewick's Wren Thryomanes bewickii Clay-colored Thrush Turdus grayi Long-billed Thrasher Toxostoma longirostre Northern Mockingbird Mimus polyglottos Common Yellowthroat Geothlypis trichas Olive Sparrow Arremonops rufivirgatus Lark Sparrow Chondestes grammacus Northern Cardinal Cardinalis cardinalis Blue Grosbeak Passerina caerulea Painted Bunting Passerina ciris Dickcissel Spiza americana Red-winged Blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus Great-tailed Grackle Quiscalus mexicanus Bronzed Cowbird Molothrus aeneus Brown-headed Cowbird Molothrus ater Hooded Oriole Icterus cucullatus Altamira Oriole Icterus gularis Lesser Goldfinch Spinus psaltria House Sparrow Passer domesticus 69 SPECIES Mary Beth Stowe McAllen, TX _www.miriameaglemon.com_ (http://www.miriameaglemon.com/) Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
