Hi, all!

Bob and I headed out under MUCH better conditions than last month (sunny,
calm, and comfortable) and had some nice specialty birds along the auto
route and the four back trails we cover (Owl, Jaguarundi, Oriole, and Cattail
Lakes). Again, we heard a lot more than we saw (22 Carolina Wrens and not
one of them came out...), but an Altamira Oriole hopped around in perfect
light and sang his happy song for us early on (by the time I got the recorder
going an Eastern Phoebe had taken over the concert)! Bob spotted the Bird
of the Day when I was trying to scope a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks at
the Resaca Trailhead and having a hard time doing so, when he said the bird
HE was looking at looked more like an owl! He was able to get the scope on
it, and sure enough, it was a Great Horned Owl! No wonder the hawks were
upset! A pair of Caracaras near the back field was nice, and I tried really
hard to turn a very distant female Kestrel into a Hook-billed Kite, but it
didn't work... ;-)

The end of Jaguarundi Trail at the river was actually one of the most
productive spots of the morning, as a distant Beardless Tyrannulet came right
in
to pishing and called right overhead, giving great looks at his bushy
head! Unfortunately Bob missed the Green Kingfisher that shot across the
river, so his kingfisher list remains at one--the Amazon! ;-) Turkey Vultures
were feeding on a dead cow across the way, and at Cattail Lakes we added a
handful of ducks, including a nice male Cinnamon Teal and Ring-necked Duck.
