A Western Tanager was the surprise of the day, flying across the road and back in front of a full tram just before the Kiskadee Trail. An afternoon search of the camping area to the north of the restrooms was unsuccessful. An estimated 300 plus Wood Storks were feeding in the Hunter's Lane Resaca in the morning and were seen again around 5 PM. Later in the evening they were heading toward the east. https://picasaweb.google.com/102513301549844753448/WoodStorksDickWilson?authuser=0&feat=directlink -- Sherry Wilson Resident Park Host Resaca de la Palma State Park 1000 New Carmen Road Brownsville, TX 78521 956-350-2920 Bird Walks every Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Butterfly Walks every Sunday - 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Night Hikes every Friday (must RSVP by 5:00 p.m. Thurs) - small fee Nature Tram Rides - Thursday thru Sunday http://www.facebook.com/resacadelapalma DIRECTIONS: The main entrance to Resaca de la Palma State Park is located on New Carmen Blvd. From Expressway 77/83, exit at Olmito, take FM 1732, follow for 2.5 miles; turn left at New Carmen Road; follow for 1.5 miles; shortly after the gravel hump in the road, turn left to enter the park. *Learn how you can help Texas State Parks:* http://bit.ly/sVdilb 56 species (+2 other taxa) Black-bellied Whistling-Duck 2 Plain Chachalaca 3 Least Grebe 2 Pied-billed Grebe 1 Wood Stork 300 Neotropic Cormorant 6 Great Egret 6 Snowy Egret 28 Little Blue Heron 1 Tricolored Heron 2 Green Heron 3 Black-crowned Night-Heron 1 Yellow-crowned Night-Heron 2 White Ibis 11 Roseate Spoonbill 1 Turkey Vulture 3 White-tailed Kite 1 Common Gallinule 1 Killdeer 5 Black-necked Stilt 12 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Solitary Sandpiper 1 Greater Yellowlegs 1 White-winged Dove X Mourning Dove X Inca Dove 3 Common Ground-Dove 1 Greater Roadrunner 1 Groove-billed Ani 49 Buff-bellied Hummingbird 1 Ringed Kingfisher 1 Green Kingfisher 1 Golden-fronted Woodpecker 5 Alder Flycatcher 9 Least Flycatcher 1 Empidonax sp. 3 Brown-crested Flycatcher 8 Myiarchus sp. 3 Great Kiskadee 6 Couch's Kingbird 10 White-eyed Vireo 1 Green Jay 8 Purple Martin 2 Barn Swallow 115 Cave Swallow 8 Black-crested Titmouse 9 Verdin 1 Northern Mockingbird 7 Long-billed Thrasher 1 Black-and-white Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler 7 Olive Sparrow 16 Western Tanager 1 adult male, flew across tram road and back just before Kiskadee Trail Northern Cardinal 15 Red-winged Blackbird 7 Great-tailed Grackle 16 Orchard Oriole 1 Hooded Oriole 1
